Thomas Meister is the co-founder of the firm’s tax practice and a partner in the tax team. He is working in the fields of domestic and international corporate tax, including tax optimization, corporate and real estate finance, structured finance, corporate reorganizations, transaction structuring and M&A. Since 2004 he is an adjunct professor for tax law at the University of St. Gall.

Thomas Meister was educated at the Universities of Lausanne and St. Gall (lic. iur. 1989, Dr. iur. 1995), New York University (LL.M. 1998), and graduated as certified tax expert (1996). For his doctoral thesis he received the 1995 Blumenstein Award. Prior to joining the firm he had working experience as a District Court clerk, general secretary at the Zurich Revenue Service, tax associate in Zurich, Geneva and Washington D.C. law firms and as a tax partner in a Zurich law firm.

Thomas Meister is fluent in German, English and French. He is registered with the Zurich Bar Registry and also admitted in New York.

Yong Whan Choi

Yong Whan Choi is the Co-Head of Yulchon’s International Tax Team and a Partner of the Japan Team. Mr. Choi obtained his LL.M. specializing in International Tax Studies from New York University and his Ph.D. from Yonsei University. Having also worked at a Japanese law firm while on secondment, Mr. Choi has extensive experience in advising multinational corporations on their tax issues in the U.S. and Japan. In particular, Mr. Choi has successfully advised numerous multinational corporations in not only the traditional industries such as the semiconductor, automobile and chemical industries, but also the platform and ICT industries (e.g., cloud, e-commerce), in relation to transfer pricing, permanent establishment, beneficial ownership, withholding tax, and restructuring issues, and also successfully represented these corporations before the Tax Tribunal and the Korean courts. In addition, Mr. Choi has advised various foreign investment funds and domestic corporations in cross-border transactions and further represented them before the Tax Tribunal and the Korean courts. As a member of Yulchon’s Japan Team, Mr. Choi has advised both Japanese and Korean corporations in the semiconductor, automobile and platform industries with regard to their inbound and outbound transactions.

Gibran Naushad

Gibran Naushad is the founder and counsel at GN Law, a law firm based in New Delhi with focus on dispute resolution and taxation laws. Gibran is also an ‘Advocate-on-Record’ in the Supreme Court of India, i.e., part of the select group of advocates who can file and initiate proceedings before the Supreme Court of India. Gibran’s focus areas include general commercial litigation and arbitration, tax disputes and advisory along with international and domestic structuring.

Gibran is presently a Senior Standing Counsel (nodal counsel) for taxation for the Government of India in the Delhi High Court. He is also a Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India in the Supreme Court of India.

Gibran completed B.A. LL.B.(Hons.) [JD Equivalent] from National Law University, Delhi. He is a member of the Bar Council of Delhi and the Delhi High Court Bar Association. Prior to setting up his independent law firm, Gibran worked at S&R Associates, a full-service law firm in New Delhi and thereafter at the Guild – Advocates and Associate Counsel, a boutique litigation setup based in New Delhi.

Gibran has been awarded the IPBA Scholarship in 2020 and the AIJA Scholarship in 2023. He was also awarded Business World’s 30 under 30 Lawyers and Legal Influencers Award (India) for 2021-2022.

Amira is a partner with the firm’s Tax, SST, and Customs practice. She is heavily involved in tax litigation and advisory with a specific focus on corporate tax, petroleum tax, tax incentives, transfer pricing disputes and the recovery of goods and services tax.

She advises and represents Fortune 500 companies, public listed companies, international and multinational companies as well as SMEs from various industries.

She has appeared before the Special Commissioners of Income Tax, High Court, Court of Appeal, and Federal Court. She is presently involved in one of the largest tax disputes in Malaysia amounting to RM9 billion in claims. She has successfully engaged in various negotiations with the Inland Revenue Board and the Royal Customs of Malaysia.

She regularly contributes to the firm’s publications and has conducted various webinars where she spoke on the current tax issues in Malaysia.

In recognition of her expertise, she has been appointed as a UiTMLaw Industry Reviewer for the tax law syllabus under the UiTM Bachelor of Laws program.
